Getting started
How do I install Waqt?
Install Waqt from the Chrome Web Store, then click the puzzle-piece (Extensions) icon in your toolbar and pin Waqt so its icon is always visible. Click the icon to open the popup, and use the ⚙ Settings link to configure it.
How do I set up my prayer times for the first time?
- Click the Waqt icon, then open ⚙ Settings.
- Choose a source: MyMasjid (your masjid's timetable) or Aladhan (calculated from your location).
- For Aladhan, click 📍 Detect my location and pick a calculation method. For MyMasjid, choose your Country → City → Masjid.
- Click Save. The toolbar badge and countdown start immediately.
What does the number on the toolbar icon mean?
It's a live countdown to the next prayer — for example 45m when there's 45 minutes to go, or 2h when it's further away. Open the popup to see the exact time and the full day's schedule.
Can I get a notification when a prayer time arrives?
Yes. Turn on the notifications toggle in Settings. When a prayer time begins, Waqt shows a desktop notification and flashes the badge. Make sure Chrome notifications are allowed in your operating system settings as well.
Choosing a source
What's the difference between MyMasjid and Aladhan?
MyMasjid shows the exact timetable published by your local masjid, including iqamah (jamaat) times and Jumu'ah. Choose this if you want to follow your masjid precisely.
Aladhan calculates prayer times from your geographic location using a calculation method you select. Choose this if your masjid isn't listed, or if you travel and want times for wherever you are.
My masjid isn't in the list. What can I do?
Waqt's masjid directory comes from MyMasjid. If your masjid uses MyMasjid but doesn't appear by Country/City, you can enter its GUID directly:
- In Settings (with MyMasjid selected), expand Advanced: enter a GUID manually.
- Paste the GUID from your masjid's screen URL — the part after
time.my-masjid.com/timingscreen/. - Click Check, then Save.
If your masjid doesn't use MyMasjid at all, switch to the Aladhan source and detect your location instead.
Which calculation method should I pick (Aladhan)?
Use the method your local community follows — for example ISNA in North America, Muslim World League in much of Europe, Umm al-Qura in Saudi Arabia, or the University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi in South Asia. For Asr, choose Hanafi if you follow the Hanafi school, otherwise leave it on the standard option. If unsure, ask at your local masjid.
Troubleshooting
The times look wrong or out of date
Waqt caches timetables on your device for speed and offline use. To force a fresh fetch:
- Open the popup and use the refresh button.
- Confirm your source, location, and method are correct in Settings, then Save again.
- For Aladhan, double-check the latitude/longitude are right for your city.
Location detection isn't working
Location is read on the Settings page, which needs permission:
- When prompted, choose Allow for location access.
- Check that location is enabled at the operating-system level (Windows/macOS privacy settings).
- If detection still fails, type your latitude and longitude manually — you can find them by searching your city on any maps service.
The countdown badge isn't updating
The badge refreshes roughly once a minute in the background. If it looks stuck, open the popup once to wake the extension, or disable and re-enable Waqt from chrome://extensions. If the problem continues, email us with your Chrome version and source.
Notifications aren't appearing
Check three things: the notifications toggle is on in Waqt's Settings; Chrome is allowed to send notifications in your OS settings; and your system isn't in Do Not Disturb / Focus mode, which suppresses them.
Privacy
What data does Waqt collect?
Waqt has no account, no ads, and no tracking. Your settings and location stay on your device. Your coordinates are sent only to the prayer-time service (Aladhan or MyMasjid) to fetch times, and are never sold or shared. See the full Privacy Policy for details.
Does Waqt work offline?
Yes. Once a timetable has been fetched, it's cached on your device, so the popup and countdown keep working without a connection. New data is fetched when you're back online or when you refresh.
